ā˜€ļøĀ PTK Supports Camp Scully – Summer 2022Ā ā˜€ļø

This summer, members started a new initiative to help support Camp Scully, located on Snyderā€™s Lake in North Greenbush. Each week, PTK volunteers visit the Northeastern Regional Food Bank in Latham to supply healthy food items for the children attending the camp.

On July 11, a group of enthusiastic PTK volunteers visited the food bank and went ā€œshoppingā€ in the warehouse for watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, apples, vegetable trays, yogurt, milk, bread, potatoes, juice, and water. The group transported the items to Camp Scully where they met with the gregarious director, Colin Stewart. He works with children in Pre-K through 11th grade that attend the day and overnight camp. This summer they are hosting up to 180 day campers and 75 overnight campers. The camp takes pride in its ā€œunplug from technologyā€ policy to allow the campers to connect with nature, engage in physical exercise and make new friends.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE REGIONAL FOOD BANK

& SOUTH END CHILDREN’S CAFE

Members Ā of the HVCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Northeastern Regional Food Bank Northway Lane to sort through hundreds of pounds of frozen meats including hamburgers, steaks, turkey, chicken, duck, lambchops, and even turducken! First, they carefully inspected the packages for quality and expiration dates, then sorted them into their respective categories, and finally boxed and weighed them for distribution. After packing the boxes, they were placed into a large refrigerated truck for delivery to various charity organizations for immediate distribution

PTK members also volunteered on April 1st at the South End Childrenā€™s CafĆ© in Albany to help out with a fun Easter Egg Hunt! The April Foolā€™s Day joke was getting snow that day, which Ā prevented the event from being outdoors. However, this did not stop the fun in any way. The volunteers arrived early to hide the egg treats filled with candy. After school, the children, (ages 5 and up) cheerfully arrived to find the hidden eggs. The children then decorated their own hard-boiled eggs with bright food coloring and fun designs. It was a fun afternoon for all and as always, a great opportunity to share smiles and laughter!

  • All those who attend will be entered into a raffle and one lucky winner will receive a hardcopy of the book signed by the author!

About the Author:

My name is Jalaysha. I am 20 years old. I graduated from HVCC in May of 2020 and I had the best two years of my life there. I wrote this book when I was 17 because I was told I have a talent and that I should share it. I would write about anything that I was going through and that I felt people could resonate with. But when I decided to publish a book, I wanted to enlighten people. Salted Caramel is knowledge, it gives perspective and shows resilience within blackness. The short poetry book offers several perspectives and images that need to be heard. I hope you enjoy what you read and write with your voice as well. Toys for Tots Drive-Thru Event was a success!!!

On Saturday December 12, 2020, Hudson Valley Community Collegeā€™s Phi Theta Kappa chapter held a drive-through event supporting the Marine Toys for Tots organization. Donations were made by members of both the college and surrounding community. The event looked somewhat different due to the pandemic: those making donations were asked to stay in their cars, while volunteers retrieved the toys. Over the course of four hours, we filled more than three large boxes with around 200 toys and books donated, along with a cash donation.

Thank you to all of the donors and PTK volunteers who helped bring Christmas joy to children in need. PTK could not have put on this event without the support we received from HVCC. Thank you to Student Activities, Communications and Marketing, Public Safety, the Events Office, the EHS Department, and the Graphics Department for all of your support for this event.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE REGIONAL FOODBANK

Often, when we think about Giving Tuesday we think, ā€œwhere can I donate money?ā€ or ā€œwhere can I donate goods?ā€

Well, in the spirit of Giving Tuesday, Phi Theta Kappa members thought ā€œwhere can I help immediately?ā€ The answer was easy: at The Northeastern Regional Food Bank.

On Monday, Nov. 30, PTK volunteers helped sort fresh fruits and vegetables that would be delivered the next day ā€” Giving Tuesday ā€” to people in need. The students were delighted when the coordinators at the food bank told them, ā€œimagine, that piece of fruit you are holding right now will be in the hands of a hungry child tomorrow!ā€ When we think of giving to those in need, letā€™s think outside the box. Letā€™s give our time, our energy, our compassion. There is no monetary value to that necessarily, but itā€™s impact is just as important, and that should be our inspiration.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE REGIONAL FOODBANK

Members Ā of the HVCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Northway Lane location of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in Latham.

They sorted through hundreds of pounds of dry, packaged goods including candy bars, cookies, crackers, granola bars, coffee, pasta, and various other food pantry items. First, they carefully inspected the packages for quality and expiration dates, then sorted them into their respective categories, and finally boxed and weighed them for distribution.

One of the highlights of the process was sorting through thousands of Reeseā€™s candy bars that would be given to local children for Halloween in just a few days. Another highlight was the experience of working with other members of the local community that share the common goal of thinking of others in need and being proactive about making a difference in the community. This is why members are proud to say #IAMPTK.

STARTING TO PLAN OUR PTK COLLEGE PROJECT!

Did you know that to become a FOUR STAR chapter we need to plan and implement a college project? What is a college project you ask?

The college project can be anything that benefits the college, aligns with the college mission statement and is approved by the college administration. Working on a college project helps our chapter to develop and strengthen a supportive working relationship with the college administration.Ā

Stay tuned for more information and what YOU can do to participate! #IAMPTK

VOLUNTEERING AT THE REGIONAL FOODBANK

Members of the HVCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY in Latham, NY on August 15, 2020. The Food Bank collects large donations of food from various locations throughout New York state. With an ever-increasing demand for food, the Food Bank has even started hosting pop-up stations throughout the capital region. Volunteers packed boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables to be distributed to local charities, food pantries and homeless shelters. Any slightly bruised food was not discarded, rather it was collected in a separate bin to be distributed to local farms for animal consumption.

The PTK volunteers took this opportunity to help the community, one of the core values of Phi Theta Kappa. WithĀ itsĀ purpose ofĀ developing leadership and service, Phi Theta Kappa promotes academicĀ excellence and fellowship for all itsĀ members.Ā This is why members are proud to say #IAMPTK.
