2010 Scholarship Recipients with Dr. Michael Green

Mariadelourdes Benton
Instructor, English, Modern Languages and English as a Second Language
Pursuing a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Albany

Malu successfully balances challenges of being a full time instructor and a doctoral student. Her performance as a student is nothing but excellent, and she is one of the best foreign language instructors on campus. In addition, Malu is an active member of the college community.

She and Natasha Anthony have organized the International Cinema Showcase event on campus, and Malu is a member of the Educational Policies and Standards Committee. She is highly professional and motivated. She also develops and teaches online Italian and Spanish courses that address the most demanding requirements of distance education. Malu presents at different conferences and symposia where she shares her experience with instructional technologies within the academic community. Malu is a great teacher who is appreciated for her work by both the department and students.
Mandy Brown

Mandy has been with the Foundation for three years and is responsible for, amongst numerous other areas of focus, the events management. She is active with the Empire State Society of Association Executives (NYS Chapter). For all who know Mandy, no one would argue that she is anything but a true professional in this arena, and that she has contributed greatly in the enhancement of the events she oversees on behalf of the Foundation and the college. She is a dedicated woman who always puts her best foot forward and has shown nothing but a positive and professional attitude.
Kathleen M. Carney

Kathi is a dedicated, conscientious and passionate member of the HVCC classified staff who clearly exemplified excellence in her professional service to the college. She has excellent administrative and organization skills. Her caring and helpful style of leadership renders her the deepest respect, trust and loyalty in those who work with or for her. Kathi is an advisor for the Circle K Club; Treasurer for North Greenbush Kiwanis; and was Past-Alumni Chairwoman for HVCC Alumni Association. She organized and assisted with three homecoming events, hosted the Distinguished Service Awards, assisted with “An Evening with Anthony Bourdain” and acted as liaison for Alumni Association. Kathi is a past HVCC Foundation Board member.
Kodjo Gozo
Custodial Worker, Physical Plant
Pursuing an Associate’s Degree at Hudson Valley Community College

Kodjo is the hardest working, friendliest, warmest person you could ever meet. Originally from Togo, in West Africa, he has worked very hard academically, taking English as a Second Language courses and taking classes each semester at the college. This past fall, Kodjo took a leave of absence to complete his degree full time. This spring, he continues to study full time, and works part time in the evenings. Many of the staff have reported seeing Kodjo in the Computer Cafe during the early morning hours studying and learning his academic material. He is very thankful for what he has and is very respectful to all those around him. Kodjo truly appreciates the opportunities he has and is taking advantage of what the college has to offer.
Samantha Henrikson

Pursuing a Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at the University at Albany

Samantha is an alumnus of HVCC. She returned to work for the college after graduating Magna Cum Laude with her B.A. from the University at Albany. During her time in college, Samantha studied abroad on the Benjamin E Gilman Scholarship, a scholarship funded by the same organization that funds Fulbright Awards. Through that experience, she developed a love for travel, other cultures, and languages, so much that she decided to make it part of her career. It is her long term goal to continue to expand her knowledge in the area of Second Language Acquisition and instruction and to blend her studies in language instruction with her experiences working in higher education. She would love to work with the international student population at the post secondary level.

Delia has proven herself as not only a survivor, but as a creator. With daily life challenges that constantly stand in her way she pursues her goals with reckless abandon and determination. I’ve yet to see someone who parallels. Creativity is her footprint in life as well as being an attentive and loving mother of four. Currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree full-time and working full-time, Delia rarely has anything but a smile on her face and greets each day with happiness.

Jennifer graduated from Hudson Valley Community College with Academic Honors. Since then, Jennifer has been working towards her BA from Empire State College but has never missed a beat in the office. Jennifer has multiple roles in the Foundation, and was the new gal in the office learning the culture while attending school. She not only excels in this office but is the staff liaison to the Foundation Board working closely with Sarah Boggess. Jennifer has the respect of all the Foundation Board members because of her easygoing personality and can-do attitude.
Christine Rogers
Instructor, Dental Hygiene Department
Pursuing a Master’s Degree in Dental Hygiene Education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City

Christine Rogers is a graduate of the dental hygiene program at Hudson Valley Community College and has returned here to teach as an adjunct clinical faculty member. Christine’s goal is to teach as a full time faculty member in a dental hygiene program. In addition to her contractual duties as a clinical instructor, she has volunteered as the Co-Coordinator of the Senior Clinic; this requires a significant amount of work outside of regular work hours. Christine has developed calibration tools to assist the department as we prepare for our 2011 accreditation site visit and has agreed to assist the department chair in the development of a required education methodologies course for allied dental educators. Christine is a hard-working, dedicated member of the dental hygiene department.
