Our first meeting took place Monday Sept. 12 at 2 PM in BRN 214. Here is a summary:
Website, Facebook https://www.facebook.com/AnimalOutreachClub/
$1000 – We have $1000 to spend on field trips, speakers, educational outreach. Let’s spend it wisely!
Service Learning – some professors give service learning credit for Animal Outreach work at Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Berkshire Bird Sanctuary, Little Brook Farm and Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. Click on the hypertext link for more info.
Empties for Animals – around campus you will see recycling bins for empty cans and bottles with a 5 cent return such as soda, water, beer, etc. Not all bottles have a 5 cent return but for the most part we get a good chunk of change ($) from this. If you can help collect empties let me know.
Halloween Bake/Candy Sale – Oct. 31 in the Campus Center from 10-2. NEED PEOPLE TO HELP OUT.
Miga the Cat – needs a home!! He is deaf and a cuddly mush ball.
Frear Park Woodchuck case – we signed a letter asking the Mayor or Rensselaer to impose disciplinary action on these police officers.
Oct. 1 Albany Animal Rights – GREAT local group to be aware of, outside of the club. Lots of great great people and I am very active with them.
Don Cook Jeweler – If you guys have old jewelry you don’t wear, Don Cook (a jeweler up the road on Rt. 4) is accepting your old stuff and melting it down – and converting this to money for the Caring Heart Horse Rescue. Great cause.
PSA Video – Stray Cats – Stray cats are an epidemic, and it is not their fault. Cats deserve the same legal protection as dogs and they do not have it in New York State. We will be doing a public service announcement about this in the semester to come. If you care about this let me know.
Cat Houses – the Civil Engineering Dept. builds outdoor housing for stray cats every winter, and we gather after exams to paint and insulate these houses. December after exams.
Elections – We elected our President, Vice President and Treasurer. We do not have a Secretary if you are interested.
Our officers are:
President: Sarah B. Geertgens
Vice President: Meaghan Evans
Treasurer: Laurie LaDuke
Field Trip – Catskill Animal Sanctuary Lastly, we are taking a field trip to Catskill Animal Sanctuary!!! We decided as a group to go on Saturday Oct. 2, but then I met with Student Activities, and due to paperwork requirements we really cannot go as early as Oct. 2. Let’s plan on October 29th, a Saturday. We will meet at 10:30 AM at the clocktower on campus and return by 3:30 at the latest. More on the field trip to follow in a separate email.
